The Safety Net Project

The Safety Net is a community-driven, youth-centred initiative aimed at ensuring that young people’s experience of homelessness is brief, rare, and non-recurring.

Massey Community Trust has a vision to create a network of host homes which would offer safe, emergency accommodation for rangatahi in west Auckland. The goal of short term host homes is to provide a safe temporary and welcoming space for a young person, giving them time to reconnect with whanau or make decisions about other housing options.

The safety net project is about empowering community, mobilising community resources and caring adults and communicating to rangatahi that their community cares and is putting that care into action by literally opening up their doors.

We want to match people in the community with the capacity to help provide temporary accommodation with those who need it. And our vision is to create a model that can be replicated consistently, allowing other trusts and community organisations to take the same ball and run with it in their local area.
